Gaëtan was born in 1944 and held his first solo exhibition in 1978. He has taken part in various exhibitions abroad: the 21st Paris Biennial (1980), Triptych, Museum van het Hedendaagse Kunst, Gent (1991) and Drawing Towards a Distant Shore: Selections from Portugal, The Drawing Center, New York (1994). He records the direct observation, almost exclusively drawn, of faces, bodies and objects. In the last fifteen years, he has increasingly focused on the face itself as the interpellant figure for the viewer, a place of restless reflection that the chance gestures in the act of drawing (from the rapid, violent scrawl to the almost imperceptible doodle) most accentuate. The self-portrait is used as a genre open to fictions for the performance of the self, alluding to various protagonists, descended from cinematic and literary fictions.
